Climate, Fog & Seasonal Weather Patterns
What visitors actually experience — and how to pack.
The Central Coast pattern
Morro Bay’s weather is shaped by the cold California Current and frequent coastal upwelling. The result is a mild, marine climate with cooler summers than inland areas, frequent fog/low clouds in late spring and summer, and most rainfall concentrated in winter.
Guest packing tip: Even on sunny days, evenings can cool quickly. Bring layers (light jacket or fleece) year-round.
Fog (the signature feature)
Fog is common—especially late spring through summer mornings and evenings. Often the day goes: foggy morning → bright afternoon → cool evening. Plan hikes and beach time for midday or afternoon when the marine layer lifts.
Rain and wind
- Rain: Concentrated from late fall through early spring.
- Wind: Spring and early summer can be breezy, especially afternoons (great for sailing; cooler for beach lounging).
